I love to think, and therefore enjoy stimulating topics. I hear something that catches my ear and suddenly I'm on a rant. It's great, unless you're the one being ranted to. But that's your problem.

A Tale of Two Houses

I was speaking recently with a cousin of mine who is hardcore right wing. He’s not a big Bush fan, so we got along that far, but he definitely isn’t a Clinton fan and he thinks Al Gore is a hypocrite. This last part almost made me take him to the ground and roll around with him until he begged for mercy. I decided that would not be wise, and being the better man, I merely stated my opinion and left it at that. Not to mention he outweighed me by a hundred pounds, and if I had gotten him to the ground, it may have hurt me a lot more than him. But he said a couple of things that got me thinking. He blamed Clinton for gutting the military and the CIA so that we were set up for the 9\11 attacks. Now, 9\11 is getting thrown around a lot now, mostly because Giuliani is running for President and he knows how well scare tactics have worked for the Bush administration. But I thought this idea of the intelligence community and military should be looked at closer.

In 1993, Clinton faced the first of many tests that would come during his Presidency. In February of that year, the World Trade Center was bombed. A car bomb was rolled in and detonated underneath Tower One. It’s funny how a lot of people think that Clinton was so weak that he would do nothing if we were ever attacked. He mobilized immediately and the men responsible for the attack were apprehended and punished. Four men were persecuted the following year, while the mastermind and driver were not put on trial for their actions until 1997. But they were caught and the American legal system beat Islamic Fascism in only four years.

In 2001, Bush faced the first of many tests that would come during his Presidency. In September of that year, the World Trade Center was attacked. A plane slammed into the side of Tower One, followed by another that took out Tower Two. It’s funny how they apparently thought Bush was so weak that he would do nothing if we were attacked. He mobilized immediately and took out Afghanistan, Iraq, and Saddam Hussein. The man responsible was never apprehended and taken to trial. America hasn’t beaten Islamic Fascism in six years and counting.

In 1998, Clinton was faced with an Iraq that was building biological, chemical, and possibly nuclear weapons as well. UN weapon inspectors had been sent in to investigate, but were given the runaround, were stopped, and had restrictions placed on them. Clinton had to two choices: let Iraq continue what they were doing or attack. Clinton chose the second option. He unleashed our technologically superior military and destroyed key military and secret sites in Iraq. After the assault of Operation: Desert Fox, UN weapons inspectors were once again allowed to enter the country. No weapons were found, all of them having been destroyed, but they continued to investigate.

In 2003, Bush was faced with an Iraq that was potentially building biological, chemical, and possibly nuclear weapons as well. UN weapon inspectors had been sent in to investigate, but were given the runaround, were stopped, and had restrictions placed on them. Bush had three choices: let Iraq continue what they were doing, attack, or invade and occupy the country. Bush chose the third option. He unleashed our technologically superior military and toppled a nation. After the assault of Operation: Enduring Freedom, military personnel entered the country. No weapons were found, all of them having been destroyed in 1998, but they continue to investigate. Although no weapons were found, Bush did destroy a nation and turned it into a broken system, a safe harbor for terrorists, and allowed Iran to become an unrivaled powerhouse in the region.

In 1999, Clinton was briefed by his security and intelligence advisors that terrorists were planning an attack on the millennium celebrations in the United States. Realizing the danger, he mobilized the vast resources at his disposal and stopped the terrorists crossing the Canadian border into America. They were prosecuted, faced justice, and America won another victory over Islamic terrorists.

In 2001, Bush was briefed by his security and intelligence advisors that terrorists were planning an attack on American soil using passenger planes. Realizing the danger, Bush did nothing, ignored the terrorist angle, sought to establish a missile defense plan that defended against invading countries (a plan that was probably doomed to failure according to many experts), and went on to the read the suspenseful tale, My Pet Goat. America was attacked using passenger planes, and Islamic terrorists won a victory over America.

These three instances are chillingly alike. I got goosebumps as I wrote this blog, looking up facts to support what I said, and realized that these two Presidents went through very similar experiences. One handled them very well, professionally, and in a way that kept this country respected by the world community. The other handled them poorly, unprofessionally, and in a way that made this country look like a bunch of ignorant, insane, half-witted buffoons. I am also curious to how Clinton gained a reputation for destroying our intelligence community and military when he used them so effectively and Bush either used them poorly or neglected them altogether. But maybe I’m just looking at things wrong. I realize that Bush has told us time and again that he would restore integrity to the White House, elevate America’s standing in the world view, and that he would support our troops. I’m just waiting for these things to happen. Thank God he only has one more year to prove it. I don’t think this country could take much more of his efforts.
